The following are some of the environmental issues that are facing the green citizens of Australia. What are your thoughts or ideas about these topics and what other issues do you feel should garner some attention from your fellow citizens and politicians?

  • According to industry information gathered by researcher IBISWorld, the Australian organic farming market is predicted to become second in the "top 10" list of growth industries in the country, surging forward by 14.8% in 2010.
  • A residential green energy survey showed that though Australians are going green, only 30% are willing to pay a premium for green power, and of those people, most would only do so if the premium was 5% or less.
  • Despite a pick-up in the global market, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said that the country's cap-and-trade system will be delayed until 2011.
  • The Australian Climate Coalition found in a January 2010 survey that though 57% of Australians believe CO2 is a greenhouse gas, that number if down by 5% from the year before. Further, only 33% of Australians support the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) while 51% oppose it.
  • Mobium Group, a Melbourne-based marketing consultancy, recently found that one third of all Australians are unclear as to what carbon trading is. Further, it found that the percentage of people concerned about climate change has dropped from 90% to 73%.
  • Australian carbon dioxide emissions from consumption of fossil fuels have risen by 55% from 1990 to 2006, where they've only gone up by 29% in Canada, 17% in the US, and 18% in Japan in the same time period.
