The following are some of the environmental issues that are facing the green citizens of India. What are your thoughts or ideas about these topics and what other issues do you feel should garner some attention from your fellow citizens and politicians?

  • Only a small percentage of Indians support their government taking strong action on the issue of climate change. There is concern that stringent regulations will slow their rapidly growing economy.
  • In India, the average amount of water used per person every year is 600 m3, a volume that is slightly more than one-third of that used by Americans, yet more than the average Russian.
  • India's per capita carbon dioxide emissions (per $1 GDP) is only 25% of that produced by China, yet the rise of 119% over the most recent 16 years is an alarming trend.
  • India has not done a great deal to protect their land and sea, increasing the total by only 12% to 4.6% compared to 1990 levels. This is even greater than more-developed countries such as Russia and Canada.
  • Authorities estimated India's annual generation of municipal solid waste to be approximately 65 million tonnes in 2010, with 90% of it sent to landfills every year. This number is expected to increase drastically as urbanization in the country increases.
  • There is concern that the green movement, which encourages women to spend their time doing energy- and resource-saving domestic chores such as washing cloth diapers, is the enemy of feminism in countries like India.
  • Though organic agriculture is growing in India. More than 70% of that produced in the country is exported. And with prices 20-30% higher for the Indian consumer looking for organics, it isn't likely to grow much domestically in the coming years.
  • India and China are home to two of the top 10 most polluted sites in the world, most likely as a result of the coal and lead-producing industries.
